Delay or travel time information? The impact of advanced traveler information systems on drivers’ behavior before freeway work zones

چکیده

Peak travel times contribute to congestion formation at freeway work zones. Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) can inform drivers in real-time about the delays and en-route provide information an alternative route a destination. Different ATIS display strategies are available; however, road authorities lack insights into how time methods sign characteristics influence driving behavior (decelerations, lateral position), drivers’ attention allocation ability subsequent choice before diversion. A simulator study was conducted with 80 State of Qatar investigate drivers' voluntary choices when encountering total (default setting) or delay updates for two routes on Variable Message Signs (VMS) Graphical Route Panels (GRIP). The GRIPs graphical conventional VMS that visual map most direct less congested destination using different color schemes. difference ratio between kept constant compare effectiveness designs towards signs eye-tracker. results showed zero detour did 74–83% take being displayed GRIP free flow attribute framing. When displaying equal times, 25% more follow than VMS. Generally, resulted efficient first location fewer mean decelerations repeated nearing Road advised activate support among drivers.

Arterial Travel Time Estimation for Advanced Traveler Information Systems

While vehicular flows on freeways are often treated as uninterrupted flows, flows on arterials are conceivably much more complicated since vehicles traveling on arterials are not only subject to queuing delay but also to signal delay. Prediction of travel time is potentially more challenging for arterials than for freeways. This paper proposes a simple approach for arterial travel time predicti...

Impacts of Sensor Spacing on Accurate Freeway Travel Time Estimation for Traveler Information

Travel time estimation is a critical ingredient for transportation management and traveler information—both infrastructure-based and in-vehicle. Infrastructure managers and operators are interested in estimating optimal freeway sensor density for new construction and retrofits. Focusing on freeway travel time estimation for display on roadside variable message signs, this paper describes a conc...
